Favorite ABBA Songs:
Dancing Queen, Should I Laugh or Cry, And Elaine

by Jon Stafford

Dancing Queen is seminal, ABBA's signature song and one of the greatest pop songs ever written. I only wish they'd release the extended version with an extra verse.

Should I Laugh or Cry was a B-side (to "One of Us" if I remember correctly), and so not one of their more well known songs. I first heard it on "I Love ABBA," a compilation I found in a discount bin in 1986. At that point I had been listening to ABBA since I was six, and thought I knew all their songs. Surprise!

Elaine is a similar story. Another B-side, and one that I did not discover until I was an adult. The lyrics are a little wonky ("It's a dead end street, they tie your hands and tie your feet" -- who ties your FEET?), but the melody and harmonies are classic ABBA.
