Slow melancholic 80s or 90s song with a clarinet or oboe in the refrain

I need to know the name of a specific song from the 80s or 90s. The beat is slow and melancholic. The vocalist is a man and sounds british to me (but I'm not 100% sure). The song is very quiet and melancholic, but not sad or tragic. His voice is neither very high nor very deep. The clarinet/oboe/(maybe even saxophone?) sounds come right after his vocals in the refrain, not while he's singing. That's the best I can remember. I hope you can help me.
