60s song with repetitive "la,la...LA, la, la, la"

by John

Song played in Safeway in mid 1990s, was very low, female singer like Melanie or Judy collins, was kind of monotone and sad, or mournful, then would burst into the la, la thing, the third "la" was emphasised louder, then trailed off into last la, la, la. I'm usually good at finding these but can't remember anything else about the song...sigh...
The la, la, la refrain was louder than rest of song, so that's all I could remember hearing
