The Song That Played In Class but I Never Knew Its Name

I don't know the words or lyrics to the song, they were soft and mumbley, sung by a guy. It had a slow steady tempo with a piano in the background that kept it this way.
I would describe it as calm rock or maybe something along the lines of indie-rock.
After a verse or so bell noises would go off, but they were synthesized; they went up and then down like "ba-DA-du-dee-dum" where the "ba" and "Da" were going up on part of an arpeggio, and the "du, dee, dum" was heading lower on the scale. It was very calm yet somewhat sad.
My government/economics teacher played it today in class and has played it before, usually during tests. I've heard it before but never got to asking him about it. I live in the United States. My teacher also plays music along the lines of Coldplay and The National if that helps.
